joe nolan

Although only 18 years old and having played guitar for 6 years, Joe demonstrates an incredibly inspired potential for songwriting and performance.

An impressive combination of technical guitar skill and a uniquely thoughtful perspective on topics of import, Joe says that his songs "usually involve some form of injustice, something wrong that hasn't been righted. I try to write about what's going on or what's happening around me, something people can relate to."

The result is a performance that is impressive and hopeful.

biography

Joe Nolan is an up and coming musician from Fort Saskatchewan who is garnering the ear of many of Edmonton's veteran musicians and cultivating a loyal fan base. Although only 18 years of age, Joe demonstrates an incredibly inspired potential for songwriting and performance. An impressive combination of technical guitar skill and a uniquely thoughtful perspective on topics of import.

Joe says that his songs "usually involve some form of injustice, something wrong that hasn't been righted. I try to write about what's going on or what's happening around me, something people can relate to." This kids uniqueness and honesty is as engaging as it is real. Joe is just a youngster but the promise of the future is plain in this lads ability.

Testament to Joe’s prowess as an up and coming musician of note and influence, was the ‘buzz’ he created at this year’s Edmonton Folk Music Festival (2008). Selected from all the performers and workshop performances over the four day festival, the Penguin Eggs Folk/Roots magazine voted Joe as one of the top three singer songwriters of that prestigious festival.

Citing Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Neil Young as major influences of his work, Joe’s sound is unlike any other. His songs are a unique blend of his own perspectives and insights of many of the world’s current woes. Critics often call him an ‘old soul’ and say his lyrics ‘mature way beyond his years’.

His debut CD, Pocket Dreams, produced by Jann Arden’s bass player, Mike Lent, is an impressive collection of 16 original songs that will stand the test of time. Easy to listen to, this CD provides more and more with each listen. The depth and richness of Joe’s songs continuously unravel and provide nuggets of wisdom that touch and connect with people of all ages. His voice and phrasing spellbind and often leaves one wanting more. With too many credits and awards to list, Joe has helped open for the likes of Canadian rocker, Kim Mitchell, and Sarah McLachlan’s guitar player, Sean Ashby.

He has shared the stage with many, including Juno award winner, Bill Bourne, and is looking forward to opening with world renowned slide guitarist, Ellen McIlwaine, this Fall. Every so often, a young artist arrives on the music scene and his audience instinctively knows that he is destined to contribute significantly to the rich tapestry of music and musicians that preceded him. Though only 18 years of age, such is the case for Joe Nolan. Watch for him.

2008, Joe Nolan's debut album, produced by Mike Lent.

Making the album turned out to be a nerve wracking experience at first for Nolan, who describes himself as “pretty shy.” Working with Lent and a handful of professional musicians was daunting, but once he got into the swing of things it became easier for him.

“I was quite fortunate to work with [Lent] and the other musicians—they’re so talented. It was quite an experience, a huge learning experience,” he says. “At first I was kind of intimidated to work with them, but then I decided that while I was there, I might as well do it. They just took the song, listened to it and recorded it within two takes; it was pretty cool.”
