paul cresey

Paul Cresey has been called an old soul in a young body because his lyrics portray feelings way beyond his years.  How else would someone who was born in 1989 be able to write with passion about historical events in the first person?

Emotional songs are to be felt not heard, that is why Paul places strong feelings in each and every song, spread out for everyone to experience, hence the title of his first  album "Piece the Picture".

Independent reviewer Peter McGee for Bluesbunny has said of one of Paul's songs, "Sinners and Saints": "It is here that the album seeps a modicum of Cresey's true talent. Above diligent picking Cresey explores the soul of a lover." CKUA Radio in their online newsletter (Mar.17,08) has written, "Whatever Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan have, Paul Cresey has IT too."

Paul is a university student (education) in Edmonton Canada so most of his concerts have been concentrated in this area. Never the less some have been notable: Concert for peace, U-22 Revue at the Royal Alberta Museum, the prestigeous "Night of Artists", CITY TV live interview and performance, CFRN (CTV) performance and interview, three interviews on CKUA radio  (one live with a performance), interviews on CBC Edmonton and CBC St. John's Newfoundland, a concert alongside folk legend Bill Bourne (to which he received a standing ovation), Capital City Exhibition, Homefest 2008 (a benefit concert to raise funds and awareness for the homeless) an invitation to play at Edmonton's largest folk music club, "Norther Lights" and a confirmation to play at one of North Americas largest folk music festivals, the Edmonton Folkfest in 2009.

The largest accolade came in the fall of 2008 when Paul was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Canadian Young Performer of the Year!  All this in just the past year!  The demand and following grows.  He recently opened to a sold out crowd for a popular local rock band. He was very apprehensive because as a solo folk singer Paul didn't know how the audience would react. After playing three encores the appreciative audience still didn't want him to leave.

Paul really has no specific target audience.  To date he has had teenagers to retired people in the audience enjoying his melodies, and that is what they are...Melodic.  That is how Paul builds his music, tune to lyrics.

He is a songwriter/musician/singer and also likes to speak to music students on the benefits of songwriting as a choice in the fine arts field. He has just recently performed and addressed the Suzuki School of Music in Edmonton. His songs have been included in a publishing library in Boston for distribution to major film and television studios and his song, "Sinners and Saints" was chosen to be used in a film to begin production in February 2009.

With close to seventy five songs written thus far and with growing exposure the likelihood of his getting discovered grows with each passing day.

biography

Born in Edmonton Alberta, Canada, Paul attended W.P Wagner High School and is currently an Education student at the University of Alberta. Paul received his first acoustic guitar at the age of 10, but was unable to play it because it was right-handed. Frustrated, Paul did not take up the guitar again until age 12, when his family purchased him a left-handed guitar. After two years of lessons, Cresey began to work on finger-picking techniques and new strumming patterns and groomed his passion for folk music.

Cresey formed a two person acoustic guitar duo called The Lefties and subsequently joined a four person band called Four Leaf Clover (the name was not completely decided upon by all members). These bands performed mostly acoustic and classic rock cover songs. Cresey’s first on stage performance was not a success and left him unable to perform in front of an audience for quite some time. With some gentle prodding from friends and family, Paul was able to take to the stage once again. The first gig that really sparked his interest in performing was at a Kenilworth Junior High School talent show in front of an audience of around 500 people.

Cresey has since pursued a solo carreer, and writes and performs all of his material at coffee houses and open stage performances. Not completely exclusive to Folk music, Paul performs many other musical genres including rock, blues, celtic and christian folk rock. Cresey’s influences include Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen among others.

Paul's voice has been compared to other artists like Dave Grohl and Jack Johnson. Initially Paul found songwriting difficult however, Paul’s first song “The Letter” was the catalyst for his songwriting ability and he soon penned multiple other songs.

Paul released his debut album “Piece the Picture” in October 2007, and it was widely recieved on Edmonton airwaves. Paul was also a featured musician at Night Of Artists and became a featured artist in the U22 Program on CKUA radio Alberta.

Most recently, Paul received a nomination for Young Performer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards in St. John’s Newfoundland. He is currently in the recording process of his second album.

Produced in October, 2007, this album was an acoustic, low budget affair made primarily to be used as a “demonstrative tool” to submit to the organizers of different festivals. As it turns out, sales have been brisk and it has been reviewed from independent agents from as far away as Scotland and Belgium.
