Tyler has been writing poetry and singing for most of his life. At the age of 17, he picked up a guitar and began to nurture his strong passion for music. In the next year, Tyler experimented with several genres including Folk, Space Rock, Electronica and Garage Rock. After the stream of projects and teachers that this experimentation brought around, Tyler began playing solo at the age of 18.
Tyler's "signature strumming-guitar-in-the-kitchen-at-the-end-of-a-hard-day's-night style" brings about music which is "yoga for the soul." His heartfelt lyrics and passion for his music are apparent in his frequent live shows around Edmonton. He is heavily influenced in his writing by the people who live with him and the people who live around him. Tyler takes the stage armed only with his guitar, voice, songbook and a ragtag collection of ever-changing people who call themselves, collectively, The Thousand. Following a cross-Canada summer journey by train in 2008 in which Tyler played in venues across the country, Tyler became a resident artist at Savoy Lounge in Edmonton from August-December 2009. He has become a fixture at several cafes and small venues in Edmonton.
In the summer of 2009, Tyler Butler and Layne L'Heureux started the local independent record label, Labrador City Records. Tyler is currently recording with this label. In addition to making his own music, Tyler is a recording engineer, record producer and show promoter for Labrador City Records. |
